Breaking Down the Sony/Marvel Studios Spider-Man Deal—And What Went Wrong by William Goodman

Sony has officially decided to take their ball and go home. As initially reported by Deadline (and later confirmed by Variety) Sony is considering ending their agreement with Marvel Studios to share the Spider-Man character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since his introduction in Captain America: Civil War, the Tom Holland version of the character has appeared in two solo films (Spider-Man: Homecoming,Spider-Man: Far From Home) and two Avengers films (Infinity War and Endgame), spawning a new love—and exciting creative period—for one of Marvel’s most beloved characters. But the deal was always on shaky ground, and many wondered how long it could continue for.

Before we move forward to untangle this twisted web that’s been woven, perhaps it’s helpful to go backward and figure out how we all got here to start. Although, that past is perhaps just as tangled as the present—and future—of the character.

With the release of Hobbs & Shaw, the forthcoming Ford v Ferrari, and new hope of a sequel (or two!) to 2015’s award-winning Mad Max: Fury Road, it’s evident that car movies continue to be entertaining for filmgoers and profitable for Hollywood. After all, who doesn’t love watching characters putting the pedal to the metal on the silver screen?

Reflecting back on nearly two decades of thrilling high-speed chases and sleek sets of wheels, our cup seems to runneth over with fantastic car movies across genres—action, indie, and horror, to name a few—that can satisfy even the most discerning film buffs.

Before we get to our crash course, a few ground rules: These selections all debuted in or after 2000, we’re limiting ourselves to one movie per franchise (meaning only one entry of Fast & Furious eligible, do not @ me), and the term “car movies” is loosely defined—if it features a car in a couple of key set pieces, it’s fair game. Get ready to start your engines, folks: here are Complex’s picks for the 15 best car movies of the 21st century.

What We Learned From Marvel Studios' 2019 Comic-Con Phase 4 Announcements by William Goodman

2019 has not been a quiet year for Marvel. Fans have met a new Captain, faced the Endgame, and traveled Far From Home—but for the first time in a while, the public has been largely unaware of just exactly what was next for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sure, there have been some markers along the road to give a vague idea of what the future held, but on Saturday, Marvel finally delivered the goods and dropped a whole bunch of information on just what we’ll have to look forward to as Phase 4 of the MCU kicks into full gear next year.

After tossing up an empty graphic that would serve as the roadmap for the show, it looked like Marvel’s Kevin Feige might seriously announce ten different movies. But as fans quickly learned, there was more at play: Six long-rumored Disney+ streaming television series were finally announced, as well as confirmation on five different films. Feige made it clear that each of these series, many of which will see MCU stars like Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen headline their own show, will be an essential part of Phase 4 storytelling.

With that in mind, let’s break it all down.

Often thought to be too silly a character to be adapted from page to film, Mysterio (played by former Spider-Man contender Jake Gyllenhaal) will finally make his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s latest Spider-Man movie, Far From Home, in theaters July 2nd. But just who is he?

After writing an incredible pair of episodes for Atlanta’s second season, Robinson transitioned over to the high-profile film-to-television adaptation of Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s beloved What We Do in the Shadows for FX, where she’s pulling double duty as both a writer and co-executive producer.

With the finale having just aired, we chatted with Stefani about her love of the movie, night shoots in Toronto, the goddess Beanie Feldstein, hating ska music, working with Jemaine & Taika, a status update on Atlanta Season 3, and much more. Spoiler Alert for the first season of What We Do In the Shadows, as we go deep into some of the series’ latter episodes, including the finale.
